A prerequisite for excellent research is a well-trained and motivated team, both in the scientific activity areas and also in those whose role is to support scientific endeavour. Especially against both this background and also the increasingly noticeable demographic shift in society and its consequences, LIKAT is also striving constantly to ensure very good working conditions and professional prospects for those in professional disciplines that render support to scientific work.
Professional qualification for non-scientific personnel
As a general principle, the Institute provides support to all individual efforts aimed at qualification, taken by its staff in the activity areas that render support to science, provided firstly that the planned qualification measure can recognisably be viewed as serving the Instituteꞌs interests – i.e. usually a measure of further training - and secondly that the Institute’s working procedures are not disturbed or interrupted to an unjustifiable extent. Factors contractually specified in detail in individual further-training agreements, aside from the financial framework – LIKAT takes a share of all costs that ranges from 50% to 100%, depending on the training measureꞌs type and its scope – also include the commitment of time involved, in the form of periods of release from other duties and/or of further training. The professional-qualification measures that are given support at the Institute range from courses in the IT and secretarial activity areas, to a certificate attesting qualification to train others, or respectively training-courses for the ꞌMeisterꞌ qualification, and through to a variety of distance-learning courses.
Based on requirements, LIKAT itself organises further-training measures with regard to languages (e.g. English courses for the staff in the service-based activity areas) or also courses that become necessary in relation to new computer programs. Depending on the need, colleagues are released from other commitments for a certain period and are provided with financial support, so as to take part, individually or in groups, in courses offered on an ongoing basis by the University of Rostock or by the Rostock-based Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD.
Trainees (course of training as an apprentice)
To be able to produce top-calibre work in a way that is suitable for taking on the future’s challenges, it is important for LIKAT to obtain very good specialist personnel and to gain their commitment to this organisation, in the activity areas that support scientific work (among other areas). To counteract the shortage of skilled specialist personnel that is projected for the medium-term to long-term, LIKAT has opted to operate training jointly with the University of Rostock, with regard to laboratory personnel in chemistry research: this is consistent with the "x plus 1" policy adopted across the Leibniz Association as a whole.
The dual training – theoretical learning plus hands-on practical experience – provided to laboratory personnel in chemistry research, is conducted both in LIKAT’s laboratories and also in those of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Rostock. This is done in close cooperation with the vocational-training school, the organisations funding and running educational courses, the Rostock branch of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and also the local branches of the Federal Employment Agency.
To enable more young people to get their vocational training and to prevent any shortage of specialist personnel in service areas established at LIKAT to provide professional support to the scientific activities, LIKAT is striving to offer vocational-training opportunities, not solely in the sense of subject-specialist training in the realm of chemistry but also in technology and administration. The Institute has experience in providing vocational training in both areas. Apprentices will be taken on according to demand in these activity areas of the Institute, in order to at least make it possible for the Institute to offer employment in these areas too after training is successfully completed.
