Service Department Analytics

Efficient analytical methods are essential for successful chemical work. This requires the availability of modern equipment, but also its support by qualified personnel. The Service Department Analytics supports the research groups at the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis by providing the necessary analytical services. In close coordination with the clients, the required methods are developed and adapted to the specific problems. The large-scale analytical equipment is supervised by scientists with many years of experience with the respective methods.

Such special experience exists, for example, in the field of analysis of chiral compounds (chromatographic methods) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of transition metals. Another focus is on solid-state and surface analysis of real heterogeneous catalysts, of which structural models are developed from the nanoscale to the macroscopic range.

The following methods are currently available to us for this purpose:

Spectroscopic in-situ investigations (on reacting systems) to elucidate the catalyst mode of action are carried out in close cooperation with the respective subject groups. In the field of analytics, X-ray and NMR methods (also under pressure) are used for this purpose.

In the research department Advanced Methods for Applied Catalysis further techniques are used, new measurement methods are developed and method couplings are realized, which are especially used in catalysis research for the elucidation of structure-activity relationships and of reaction mechanisms.

Some large-scale equipment is operated jointly with the Institute of Chemistry of the University of Rostock for optimal utilization. The IT infrastructure allows access to the analytical data by the users and thus offers further possibilities for evaluation and interpretation.
