Mass Spectrometry

In the analytical services department, mass spectrometers are operated in combination with chromatographic devices (so-called “hyphenated techniques”, GC-MS and LC-MS) and in “stand-alone” mode (via direct inlet):

  • Thermo Electron MAT 95-XP
  • Agilent 7890/5977A GC-MS
  • Agilent 8890/5977B GC-MS
  • Agilent 1260/6130 Quadrupol LC-MS
  • Waters Acquity UPLC H-Class/Xevo G2-XS TOF LC-MS

The sector field mass spectrometer MAT 95-XP is designed for high and low resolution measurements. In the below listed ionization modes, positive and negative ions can be detected with different scanning techniques, both as a solid and in solution:

  • EI (Electron Ionization)
  • CI (Chemical Ionization)

In GCs with mass-selective detectors, ionization occurs via EI, in LC-MS usually via ESI (Electrospray Ionization). The time-of-flight LC-MS enables conclusions about the composition of the examined compounds (so-called high-resolution mass spectrometry, HRMS) due to the mass accuracy of < 3 ppm.

Mass spectrometry is operated in cooperation with the Institute for Chemistry at the University of Rostock.
