Organization
LIKAT is a research institution within the Leibniz Association. As an "An-Institut", an institute connected with but legally independent of another organisation (in LIKAT’s case the University of Rostock), LIKAT has the legal form of a registered association; its constituent bodies are the general meeting, the board of curators and the scientific advisory council. On the basis of parity, it is jointly financed by its host state - Mecklenburg-West Pomerania (MV) - and the German federal government. In terms of the specialist subject matter, at host-state level the responsibility lies with the Ministry for Education, Science and Culture; at national level it lies with the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). Board
The management of the institute - the board - consists of four people, with an executive director appointed for a limited term. The basis for the board’s actions is LIKAT’s constitution. The board bears overall responsibility for the scientific work of the institute and ensures that the organisation’s business is conducted in the appropriate way.

Internal Scientific Board
The internal scientific board conducts the internal management of LIKAT. It is the institute’s executive director who chairs this body. The internal scientific board consists of six heads of department, who are conducting research activities at the institute. Aside from the heads of department, there are a further five professors of the University of Rostock associated, so that currently there are 11 research areas in LIKAT which take on scientific assignments. These research areas are sub-divided according to topics, with these research areas working on a variety of research projects. The research topics are run by experienced researchers whose work is funded from the organisation’s core budget. PhD students, post-docs and technical staff work on the respective topic of research in a targeted way. The research projects and topics are allocated to a research area; however, depending on the issue being addressed and the scientific expertise involved, these matters are dealt with across departments or indeed also across research institutes. That way, it is possible to work on new research projects using the appropriate specialist expertise, without needing to make constant changes to the organisational structure.

Scientific Advisory Committee
On scientific questions, the scientific advisory committee advises the board, as well as the board of trustees and the general meeting. It gives recommendations on the institute’s programme of work and assesses the latter’s scientific work. In addition, it cultivates contacts to institutions, domestically and abroad. The membership of the scientific advisory committee, apart from including representatives from universities or other research institutions, also has representatives from industry; members are appointed for four years (with the possibility of re-election), in agreement with the board of curators: the board has the right of proposal on members and proposals are subject to the endorsement of the general meeting.

General Meeting
The general meeting receives the board’s annual reports; by due process, it discharges the board from its duties for the time period of the report. The basis for this is an annual external audit. The general meeting decides on resolutions regarding changes to the organisation’s constitution. From among its membership, the general meeting elects a chairman / chairwoman for a four-year period, with provision made for the possibility of re-election. The general meeting is comprised of representatives of academic research – e.g. the rector of the University of Rostock – and of industrial research; apart from this, there are also representatives from Mecklenburg-West Pomerania state’s Ministry for Education, Science and Culture and also, at national government level, from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Board of Curators
The board of curators advises the board and the general meeting on matters of principle, particularly those relating to the business plan and the research plan, as well as the budget for the programme of activities. The board of curators appoints the executive director and his/her deputy, as well as the members of the scientific advisory committee; it also has the right of proposal regarding members of LIKAT. The board of curators is led by a representative of the government of the organisation’s host state (MV). It is comprised of appointed members (representatives of the federal government and of the University of Rostock, respectively) in addition to members elected for four years, with the possibility of re-election.
